This artwork is the last remaining of a limited edition of machine-based painted embroideries I created based on Hokusai's print "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". This embroidery was created by painstakingly hand painting linen and machine embroidering into it. I have depicted this particular wave in a toxic green, with a logo-like star serving as a brand an a warning. Hokusai's fractal composition is extraordinarily harmonious, but also depicts the often overlooked imminent death of fourteen oarsmen, who I have depicted minimally as dots. The coexistence of beauty and death is portrayed boldly and delicately in this image. One of my favourites.
This work comes in its own hand-made lime-wash shadow frame, so the work measures 42 x 32 cm in total.
