Artwork Description

When my brother was born, I had already spent 10 years of my life as an only child so his emergence into my life was profound. In this painting, I have portrayed him as Hamlet. Now 17, my brother embodies so much of what this character represents – burgeoning youth, self-consciousness and the fluctuating forces that define adolescence.

All art by Loribelle Spirovski

A multi-tonal red background with an abstract line drawing of a revolving door in the centre. Interspersed within the door are segments of various figures: the statue of a man, a bull and splices of sky and plant life. A woman is leaning on a couch in a living room. She is sparsely painted, with graphic outlines. The background is visible through her body. Beside her is an abstract metal sculpture and a monochome woven tapestry is hung on the wall.
