In my undergraduate years, I happily stumbled upon a a few magical photographs of sheep in an old National Geographic lying in the etching studio. I remember the day so well, as it was an epiphany in my ‘Agnus Dei’ journey. Over the last 30 years, I have explored the subject matter with a culmination in 2000 in Holland. I walked into an intimate gallery in the Jordaan area of Amsterdam, and there it was...the most beautiful miniature depiction of Farm animals, which included 5 magnificent sheep paintings. It cemented my love for the subject matter, and inspired me to this day. ‘Family of Four’ is inspired by my own miniature sheep collection, which now stands at 2 dozen specimens. I arrange them in groups, make sketches and drawings in preparation for the final paintings. This gives me endless compositional possibilities.
