I just had to capture the vibrant rainbow colours and quirky personality of the beautiful Gouldian Finch. This wonderful little bird put on a show for me at a specially managed breeding sanctuary at the Mareeba Wetlands on the Atherton Tablelands. The Gouldian Finch is listed as nationally endangered and was once commonly seen across Northern Australia in the savannah woodlands but is now only rarely seen in small, scattered populations across the north. I hope that by capturing the beauty of this threatened species on canvas will enlighten people as to it's plight and maybe help in some way to bringing change.
NOTE: I have created a textured varnish finish of matt over gloss which gives the painting a dappled matt coat with some stippling of fine gloss showing through - it suits this painting very well.
