After observing flowering magnolia trees from a taxi while on holiday, I went back to the studio at home inspired to capture the colour and shape of these flowers. As a painter I find it easy to tighten up and paint or draw too literally so I conciously tried for looseness and abstract shapes in this piece. I think this allows for accidents that happen along the way to remain and in the end often makes for a work that captures the essence of a thing rather than an exact likeness which is sometimes more effective.
