Artwork Description

Splendid Fairy-wren I

This painting depicts a male Splendid Fairy-wren (Malurus splendens). This species is synonymous with the arid and semi-arid regions of central Australia. The males when in full breeding plumage are a vibrant mix of blues and parts of the plumage are highly iridescent. Splendid Fairy-wrens are a delight to watch as they are active and restless; they make jaunty hops and bounces, particularly when foraging on open ground or amongst the lower branches of shrubs. The birds typically live in small family groups, of up to about 8 birds. Their balance is assisted by a proportionally long tail, which is often held upright and gives the Fairy-wrens their unique and characteristic shape. They are small insectivorous birds measuring just 14cm in length.

In this painting the wren is shown at larger than life size and as they are so often seen perched on top of a weather fence post. I prepare the linen panel with PVA size and gesso. A satin acrylic varnish is applied to the painted area to protect the painting while the linen background retains its natural appearance and texture.

Painting details:
This is my original artwork. The title, the year it was painted and my signature are all on the back to ensure authenticity.

The linen panel is 12 inches wide by 12 inches high and 1 inch deep. The back of the panel is finished neatly and has d-hooks and hanging wire affixed (so it is ready to hang when it arrives).

The painting would make a lovely pair with the other work Splendid Fairy-wren II which is also on a 12 x 12 inch linen panel. One of these paintings would make a lovely gift for a special occasion (wedding, anniversary or birthday) for anyone who loves birds.

The painting will be carefully wrapped and protected and posted in a cardboard mailing box.
