Artwork Description

Oil on linen, ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

This piece is one of my first attempts to define an aesthetic language using a fixed curved structure. Using ten pure oil pigments (representing biodiversity) I then poured each colour over the structure repeating them sixteen times, allowing them to dry before flattening out the canvas.

Painting in this way, obscures your sight. Forcing you to feel your way around surfaces rather than have the benefit to directly observe as you would on a flat surface. However, the discovery of this working practice gave me the confidence to carry on.

This painting was originally titled MA Sixteen. However, in 2011, during an art installation it was accidentally damaged. As a consequence, I felt the mark created represented the fortunes of life. So I left it as is and simply just changed its title.

A sheet of patinated copper covered in oil paint and wax. The patina shapes the form of a tree trunk, with impressions or depressions created throughout its length by both large and small drill holes. The connected small holes describe the Scribbly Gum moth larvae feeding trails.A sheet of patinated copper covered in oil and wax.
