This particular artwork is different from my usual abstracts, I've done this one as part of an exercise with the objective of paying tribute to an artist. My artist of choice was Picasso, and I had stumbled upon one of his works at the NGV. It was a vase with 4 girls painted on it. Picasso was known to frequent brothels when he lived and worked in Paris, the ladies at those brothels were a staple subject seen in many of his works.
At first, my idea was to pay tribute to him, but as my ideas developed I found myself wanting to do something different with girls, keeping true to the form and colour seen in the original artwork, what I changed was the scarves those girls had thrown at them. I decided to use familiar patterns from high-end fashion brands, in an attempt to change the perspective of the viewer. My work could now be seen as a critique rather than a tribute.
I've created acrylic skins with the patterns and decoupaged them onto the painting.
This painting comes framed with a black timber frame (see pictures).
With the frame, the total dimensions come to 74 x 54 cm
