A feather hangs suspended on the surface of a still lake, while cloud reflections waft over it. Occasionally an errant breeze causes it to drift toward the birds that ruffle purple-blue feathers in the shallows.
Pukeko’s are Australian Purple Swamp Hens that were self-introduced into New Zealand. They are a common sight strutting about open fields and wetlands. I have fond memories of their distinct calls and the brilliant red of their beaks blazing in the sun.
