A contemporary take on botanical illustration, this is a rare painting for me - it was a fully formed idea before I even picked up a brush.
The latest in my ongoing series, Banksia Imaginata, in which I create paintings inspired by my favourite Australian native plant, this one was painted entirely at home during the strange time (April 2020) of lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This banksia (my frequent subject) is self-representative. Colour is very important to my well-being so there is a lot of it in my life, in my clothing and home, and of course in my painting so I really wanted to create something vibrant and the ink pencils really did the trick - pure ink in solid form, once you add water the colours B(L)OOM to life.
The painting is on a stretched canvas 1cm deep sitting in a dark stained ash float frame, 3cm deep. My signature is on the back and there is also a small stamp of my initial on the front on the bottom right hand side in a shade slightly lighter than the surrounding paint colour.
Acrylic paint and ink pencils, varnished.
