Medium

A layered and textured acrylic paint background of ochres, oranges, yellows, reds has been drawn over to 'find' the images within. Using paint marker & graphite, I outlined the shapes of the stems and blooms. Then mixing up a grey-green reflective of the Australian bush, I created a smooth layer around the subject. The artwork is made on cradled gessoboard.

Description

This work is part of a large body of work on banksias. A long term interest has become a bit of an obsession, fuelled in the most part by a viewing of Celia Rosser's complete set of banksia watercolours completed during her 25 years at Monash University. Since seeing those works in Hamilton Gallery in May 2018, I've been studying texts and images of this range of Australian natives and am still increasingly fascinated by their variety, textures, colours, sizes and shapes.
