There are plenty of lovely paintings with pretty birds, foliage and flowers, so I decided to do a painting with those features of our landscape that don't usually get a look in......and now for something completely different.......this work is my celebration of everything considered reasonably unattractive, undesirable or long forgotten; it's a shout out to everyone and everything that doesn't measure up to the 'beautiful' standard. Like the prickly pear, for example - a noxious week , granted, but it pierces the Australian landscape with such a shapely architectural structure that parts of the country would be boring without it. Or the bush turkey- that ancient relic that must be admired for it tough adaptable nature, its fantail of black plumage and the brilliant red and yellow markings. An old motorbike or petrol pump or a litter of old tins and signs can be trash, but to me they are rusty gold, telling our history with their vintage graphics and outdated notions. To some it's all trash, to others, like me, it's all treasure. Its gritty with lots of texture, masculine, and ready to hang with wire across the back and varnished.
