Sometimes he walks 'going with the flow' allowing the architecture of the city guide him; other times he challenges the pull of the city's design, walking, running and jumping in resistive directions.
While walking, Mat gathers up material β dirt, paper, metal, rust, oil, concrete β in the soles of his shoes, fills his pockets and senses. Back in the studio with the walk fresh in his mind he draws, paints and scratches onto paper and canvas with the materials he has gathered. Again he allows them to guide him in the same way as the city; other times he will resist the pull of the materials and push them in ways they were never meant to be to create energetic and haptic marks.
βLaid out before me is a blank canvas. I retrace my steps from earlier in the day, this time guided by the material I'm pushing, pulling, dragging, crushing, wiggling, dropping, and rolling across the canvas,β Vaughan explains.
