One of the most beautiful street trees in my neighbourhood, the Judas-tree, is a small deciduous tree from Southern Europe and Western Asia which is noted for its spectacular floral display deep pink flowers in spring.
Its common name derives from the belief that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from this tree species after he betrayed Jesus, causing its white flowers to turn red. It has other common names, too, with more cheerful connotation, including the love tree and the Mediterranean redbud.
