Artwork Description

This painting is inspired by vintage postcards featuring attractions like the Big Lobster, and old-school coastal attractions like the 1960s Pet Porpoise Pools, where dolphins would play dead when a trainer pointed a toy gun in their direction. Mixing elements of these disparate destinations leads to a very different kind of story.

Old-school tourist attractions such as Big Things and family-run dolphin pools are becoming emblems of the past. Heritage listing or repurposing mark these things out as being of another time. The qualities that define these places โ€“their size, their promise of communion with nature on some level โ€“ would be defined as mythic in a less kitschy context.
