This painting is inspired by vintage postcards featuring attractions like the Big Lobster, and old-school coastal attractions like the 1960s Pet Porpoise Pools, where dolphins would play dead when a trainer pointed a toy gun in their direction. Mixing elements of these disparate destinations leads to a very different kind of story.
Old-school tourist attractions such as Big Things and family-run dolphin pools are becoming emblems of the past. Heritage listing or repurposing mark these things out as being of another time. The qualities that define these places โtheir size, their promise of communion with nature on some level โ would be defined as mythic in a less kitschy context.
