This painting is based on vintage postcards that I collect. These postcards purport to show the typical Aussie family holiday, including visits to Big Things and theme parks. Picking out elements of these postcards and giving them a bit of a remix creates some very different stories.
Old-school tourist attractions such as Big Things and family-run dolphin pools are becoming emblems of the past. Heritage listing or repurposing mark these things out as being of another time. The qualities that define these places โtheir size, their promise of communion with nature on some level โ would be defined as mythic in a less kitschy context.
