Artwork Description

The quote in the title is from the ancient Greek female poet Sappho. Her poetry only survives as fragments on ancient scrolls but there is one complete poem. She was from Lesbos and her love poetry was mostly directed towards other women which is where the terms "lesbian" and "sapphic love" come from. I used her poetry for this series of works because of the connection with the purple of the irises as well as Greek goddess Iris being the personification of the rainbow (the rainbow and the colour purple being connected with the LGBTI community). There was a lovely synchronicity with the Greek poet, the colour purple and the rainbow.
