To paint this painting I went on an extraordinary adventure. I hopped on a plane to Germany and drove to the French border to buy a French Vanilla tea. On the way back from Strasbourg to the Munich airport through the Black Forest I picked up Lily-of-the-Valley flowers and a delicious chocolate cake from a local café. Then I flew back to Sydney and, while everything was still fresh, I arranged my composition and started painting. Did I mentioned that it was in May when these flowers flourish?
One of the paintings from the Tea Time Series that are bubbling with colours. I tried to create an inviting warm feeling of a tea party. My still lives from the Tea Time Series are telling stories about people. Although people stay out of the picture, their presence is felt. It was them who set up a table, baked a cake, put flowers in a vase and poured tea into a cup. They can be back any minute. It’s about someone’s tea party, a birthday celebration or a get-together with a close friend. Bent crawling spoons, dancing cups and tea pots add dynamics to otherwise would be static still life paintings.
