An original watercolour and pastel painting of comets and koi with fantasy elements on a moonlit night in my garden.

The idea for this painting began a long time ago. We have a small fish pond which is nestled among the native trees and plants in our garden. I feed these comets every day and they know that when I pull my blinds open early each morning to let in the day that food is on the way! They swim to the surface‚ ready for a feed and it is a ritual that I have come to love.

This artwork came to be because I heard a noise just after sunset right at the comet’s pond. I went out to explore and before I even investigated what might be troubling the comets‚ I could not help but look up into the sky as it was a very still‚ peaceful and clear evening. I saw a full moon which not only lit up the evening sky but illuminated the comet’s pond when I discovered an unwelcome guest……

….a Cane Toad! This rather ugly amphibian who had not been invited to the pond‚ sat majestically on a rock claiming the place to be his own. I simply shooed him away with my hand and off he hopped‚ ungainly‚ into the deeper foliage of our yard. The fish seemed a bit traumatised by their midnight guest so I gave them a tiny bit more fish food to calm their nerves.

I have not included the cane toad in this artwork as I rather preferred to capture the comets and koi splashing about and coming up to the surface of their pond at midnight‚ drawn to the full moon. This painting has fantasy elements such as the toadstools who are leaning towards the moon‚ drawn by its light and being pulled by the tree branches.
