DESCRIPTION

This photograph, from the series Last call (2017 Bowness photography prize, honourable mention) is from the last conversation I had with my friend and brother-in-law Alberto Vidal who was in the final weeks of terminal cancer in a hospital in France.

Over the years we shared many conversations on Skype, separated by a screen and thousands of kilometres of ocean. Something of the pathos of these calls is captured in these screen shots in which the breaking up of the image into exaggerated pixels of colour is almost a metaphor for what was happening to his body, as is the often unusual angle of the view, a reminder of the times we were left watching the ceiling when the less than convenient mode of communication imposed its own vision.
