Mat was born in Libya when the country had a King. He was raised in the UK and given a blue plastic camera when he was little, so naturally went on to study photography. After 3 years at the Plymouth College of Art & Design, he hit the streets of London in 1984 as a freelance assistant.
In 2009, he moved to Melbourne. In his landscape work Mat has a very singular vision, which perhaps stems from a distant memory of the Libyan desert.
“I`ve always been drawn to journey`s that move through the landscape towards a distant horizon. I love wide open spaces and the simplicity in shape and form. Little nuances in a landscape interest me. Geography and history play an important part too, but I like nothing more than standing still and imagining the passing of time over the land.”
Mat`s craft bridges digital, traditional wet-process and alternative processes. His vision includes framing and presentation which is integral to the finished work.
Mat exhibits regularly in Melbourne and as part of the wider international community of alternative photographers in various online publications.
