I have been creating photographic images since I was 9 years old. I have limited formal training in photography, primarily being self-taught. I have also learned much from others as an active member of photographic groups, including the Australian Photographic Society, Photo Access at the Manuka Arts Centre, and the Friends of APS Contemporary Group Facebook group. I have completed several photography courses, including the Nikon Traveling School of Photography, recreational photography at TAFE, and a short correspondence course to obtain a Diploma of Freelance Travel Writing and Photography. I have also learned by teaching photography to others, attending numerous presentations and workshops and spending valuable time with other great photographers I have had the good fortune to meet. My photographic skills have been recognised, by photographic bodies such as the International Federation of Photographic Art and through selection as a finalist in significant exhibitions such as the Art of Photography Show (San Diego, USA).
My focus with my photographic art is to produce pleasing and interesting imagery that others will enjoy and immerse themselves in. I have a diverse subject matter practice but always look for details and constructions that will engage the viewer, provoke them into thinking about what they are seeing, and generate discussion. I utilise a variety of software to modestly alter some images but generally rely on capturing what I see through my viewfinder. I explore themes, but also shoot individual images of seen subjects that captivate me.
My creative process is straightforward. I explore any, and all, locations looking and, more importantly, seeing. I can be inspired by any location or subject; but am particularly interested in contemporary society and the aspects of it that distinguish it from the past. I look forward to continuing to capture and create interesting photographic art for the rest of my life, exploring different techniques and technologies as they emerge. I will continue to enter selected photographic prizes.
