DESCRIPTION

This is the autoclave door in the Torrens Island Quarantine Station in Adelaide, South Australia. Quarantine stations were established at each of the major ports of entry to Australia in colonial times and for many migrants the quarantine station was their first experience of a new life in Australia. The Quarantine Station was built in 1879 to stop passengers bringing diseases such as small pox into Adelaide.
