The Azure Kingfisher is a stunning bird with its royal blue plumage contrasted with vivid orange underparts. Diminutive in size, it's long slim bill is used to to plunge into shallow water to capture fish, aquatic insects and crustaceans. They will sometimes watch platypuses and nab any food that they may disturb.
Kingfishers were the first birds that I really became fascinated with. As a teenager I'd go for a daily paddle down the Tweed River after school and I'd often see a "Little Kingfisher" on a perch in the muddy banks of the river. When the tide was right, I'd stop paddling so I could drift by and observe the beautiful Kingfisher. Those striking blue feathers and the birds intense focus just captivated me. It was always a special moment of peace for me as everything else just fell away.
