The Blue-winged Kookaburra exists in central northern and north-western Australia, with some overlap in Queensland, although this species is more coastal. The Laughing Kookaburra is not really laughing when it makes its familiar call. Its cackle is actually a territorial call to warn other birds to stay away. Laughing Kookaburras often become quite tame around humans and will readily accept scraps of meat. Since my arrival in Australia, I have been serenaded numerous times by these jovial birds with their loud chorus of 'koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kaa' . So Australian and so lovely. Bluey is defintely what we refer to here in Australia as a "true blue" Aussie.
