“Yasar II Lake Burdur” is my response to this familiar driving question.
Have you ever been compelled to take a detour off the highway to stop and explore? Even when you know you need to get to the next destination before sunset. It happened to me while driving from Fethiye to Pamukkale in Turkey.
I glanced at the time and thought to myself, I must reach my hotel before dark, but instead I slowed down and turned off the highway. Instinct told me to stop and admire the views across Lake Burdur. And with no other boats or people about to disrupt her beauty I was rewarded by this clinker-built boat called Yasar II.
The afternoon autumn light was soft; the boat's hull was mirrored in the still deep blue water of the lake. Atop her mast she proudly displayed a flag. The Turkish flag’s red tone adding a nice contrast to shades of blue surrounding the boat. Nestled on the far side of the lake is the small town of Karakent and in the distance the snow-capped mountain of Sogut Dagi (1875 meters). I took my photo and then resumed my journey towards my hotel and the rich thermal pools of Pamukkale.
Months after returning from my holiday in Turkey I had my negatives processed. When I came to the photo of Yasar II on Lake Burdur I was rewarded once again by the simplicity of a boat moored on the edge of a serene lake. I was glad I trusted my instincts and made time to discover what was hidden from the highway.
