Artwork Description

This work was a direct response to conducting my first field season in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, in October-November 2010; being the first archaeologist in the world to do so.

Both in texture and colour, I feel it encapsulates the sensation of the experienced landscape. Both claustrophobic and precarious at the same time, the Zone is an urban landscape gone feral. This piece is a map of my first experience in a radioactive, abandoned landscape, and the effect that place had on me.
