This is a piece of pure impressionism. It is painted in built up layers of thick oil paint, with a heavy impasto texture, which helps to convey a sense of immediacy - of a monetary glimpse in time, where light, colour and atmosphere tell the story. I think I have captured something of the sense of peace and relaxation of this woman reading in the garden, beside an arbour of hanging wisteria blooms, a vibrant splash of violet and lilac. Influences include E Phillips Fox, John Singer Sargent, and of course, Monet. It is a small and intimate painting which will be greatly complimented by a suitable picture frame.
