I was faced with a "creative block" and sat in my studio not quite knowing which way to proceed. I picked up the Makita cordless drill that was nearby and noticed things about it that I'd never seen before.
The vents and the shape of the moulding and even the branding. Even the little artistic groove that goes around the handle and up to where the motor is housed. All of a sudden the mundane took on a beauty of its own and I decided to paint it much the way I might a vase of flowers. I hoped to make the mundane, characterful and beautiful.
The image is dark through necessity but the light highlights the grooves in the drill bit and the drill itself whilst the black heavily worn chuck is lost a little in the dark background.
I have only included the image itself not one sitting on a wall in a house because I think the person who buys this will probably be a little creative on their own and will make an uninfluenced decision about where this painting will fit in for them.
