This was inspired by a book I read about a woman living in ancient Egypt. I was transfixed by her story. To me she embodies a mother’s love. She was completely devoted to her family and worked tirelessly. I was in awe of her strength and sense of duty, despite her efforts being unrewarded or appreciated.
In order to feed the family she had to work the land, walking miles each day to find the water needed for the crops she planted as well as her family. When the land proved not fruitful, the entire extended family would pack up and start over. The background of this painting is an aerial image of the land she worked. I deliberately ensured that the land was visible through her portrait. The intention was to show her incredible relationship with nature, to show she was at one with it, that it was a part of her. She understood if she cared for it, it would intern care for her.
The book explained how a families’ wealth was perceived by the fabrics and jewellery they adorned. I have dressed her in multiple necklaces and have her draped in fabric that is embellished with rich red silk embroidery.
Despite multiple attempts I could not capture her face. So, I chose to leave it blank, free for the viewers imagination. In her arms she holds her child who is feeding from her breast.
The painting is very textural, I experimented with many ways to apply the paint, including using rough rope, water guns as well as sticks and fingers. The paint was applied rapidly in fits of passion.
I love this painting, just as I loved the book. It has been hanging in my home for many years, yet each time I look at it evokes a different emotion. Her devotion reminded me of my own mother. Like this woman she has always put the needs of her family before her own. Her love is fierce and know no boundaries!
