Artwork Description

This was inspired by a group of women I saw rehersing a dance routine during my recent trip to Yogja. The women were beautifully dressed, adorned in layers of traditional fabrics. They moved elegantly, were poised and deep in concentration. It was beautiful to watch, a highlight of my trip.

The initial drawing was drawn in ink using a tool called a canting which is used to apply wax on traditional batiks. Her clothing is collage of photocopies of photographs of the women's clothing and paintings derived from the patterns of traditional textiles.
