'An Awe-inspiring Moment of a Lifetime' is from a series of paintings from a beautiful location situated in The Great Keppel Islands. An Awe-inspiring Moment of a Lifetime has been created as part of a series of artwork from The Rejected Tourist Bucket List.
The Rejected Tourist Bucket List is an ironic take on a tourist attraction that has been destroyed by the elements. The Middle Islands Underwater Observatory is nestled within the Great Keppel Islands group. It was closed in 2008. It was once a significant, local tourist attraction. This ‘must see’ bucket list attraction is now battered and abandoned.
The Resident Osprey was inspired on a tour exploring the rugged and beautiful coastline of Great Keppel Island. Exploring The Great Keppel Islands by foot or boat allows you the true beauty to see; the rugged rock, white sandy dunes, turquoise crystal clear water and the rusty Underwater Observatory with an abundance of marine and bird life. A memory that will last a lifetime.
I wanted to capture the sense of the metaphorical beauty contrast of the rusty rich colours of the Middle Island Underwater Observatory structure and share its raw beauty; home to many beautiful creatures including a Loggerhead Sea Turtle that had taken up residence. Loggerhead Sea Turtles are beautiful and majestic creatures which are sadly listed as Vulnerable on the Endangered Species List.
What remains of the observatory structure I find to be quite beautiful. I have made these paintings so that others may recognise some of the beauty that I see. My artwork hopes to explore past the visible signs of destruction and take in the aesthetic delights; hidden beauty and the abundance of life, that so many people now overlook.
