In a cultural shift, there's discussion about what women were and weren't allowed to do and how things have supposedly changed in our modern society. A strange, but consistent topic that gets brought up is women and the association with the colour red. Jordan Peterson, who was named one of the most "brilliant minds of our time" referred to red lipstick on a women as "arousing" and that was his justification on why sexual harassment is so prevalent in the workplace. In the Suffragette movement, red lipstick was a part of their uniform, where some women wore bold, red lipstick to draw attention to their cause. Historically, red has been seen as a symbol of power, worn by kings and religious leaders, yet in the Handmaids Tale - their only power is their presumed ability to bear children, echoing the colour of menstrual blood. In this work, red is everywhere, the model is surrounded by such a bold colour you can't help but feel overwhelmed just looking at it.
