This artwork depicts visiting the Tiwi Islands to undertake Women’s Voices. Specifically, when a group of young women took me on a walking tour around Wurrumiyanga Island at sunset and they showed me the huge 5 metre crocodiles sunbathing on the golden sand between the salt water and lush green shrubs.
I remember hearing a young one proudly point out that the saltwater crocodile was her totem. They also went on to explain that everyone who lives on the Tiwi Islands both Aboriginal or non-Indigenous, belong or are adopted into one of the four skin groups (sun, pandanus, rock and mullet) which connects them to the Island and the people.
This painting try’s to capture that moment in time, with the gold sand shimmering between the salt water and lush scrub, both textured like crocodile skin.
