About

Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Sarah McDonald worked as an artist and art teacher in Australia and the United Kingdom after completing her B.A. in Art and Design Education at the University of South Australia in 1995. Inspired by her travels, she returned to Australia and has had 16 successful solo exhibitions in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and New York as well as many group shows and corporate commissions.
Sarah is recognised for her palette knife technique using generous amounts of oil paint to create her tactile and vibrant paintings. She is well known for her landscapes, which she has won awards and been a finalist for in Art Prizes. Her recent subject matter of Still Life "Posies" have been extremely popular and appealing because of their expressive and contemporary take on the traditional Still Life. Light and Colour is what Sarah is drawn to when making her paintings and being inspired out in the landscape. She is able to represent this in her unique way, drawing the viewer inane allowing them to make their own personal connection with the painting.

Influences

From a young age Sarah has been influenced by the work of the Fauves, Matisse in particular and his strong, bold use of colour. Richard Diebenkorn the American painter has also been an artist she admires the work of and the colour field American Abstract Expressionist, Mark Rothko. Changing light in the landscape and the effect this has on the colours in the landscape is a huge influence on Sarah's paintings and what she is inspired to capture on canvas.
