Located in the West Wallsend area, the butterfly caves is a traditional women’s meeting and ceremonial place. Within the artwork you see a trail moving across country depicting the journey made to this significant site. Made up of traditional Aboriginal symbol for people the half-moon images within the work also symbolise the caves, as well as representing women, while the circles following this path relate to girls and young women. The caves were visited regularly by Awabakal women for the passing on of cultural teaching and learning from women to girls. The butterfly caves provided a private and safe place for Aboriginal women to perform traditional practices which continue to this day.
