The inspiration for this painting was the reflections in the black vases of the objects around them; purple velvet curtains and yellow lemons. I am playing with the historic symbolism of fruit in Still Life paintings as having sexual connotations. The lemons, round and curvy, are placed on a pedestal and are adored by the placement of the vase below it. The velvet curtains are an arrangement of gentle folds.
I deliberately arranged this Still Life, but really, I was studying the colours of the black vase and teaching myself tonal values with the folds of material. The sexual symbolism is a little 'tongue in cheek'.
You will however, love the realism and complimentary colours.
