Artwork Description

Drawn to the charm of travel and the inherent stories behind maps, Sharon has used them as a base to explore human expression and our connection with nature. Her Map Series marks her first series as a professional artist. Having travelled the world a few times over she loves the nostalgic feeling evoked by old maps. “They seem to speak of all the roads and the people who have travelled them. They kind of represent all of human life to me. All of the places we live and the things we do there, so it felt right to me to use them as a base for my paintings.”

These finely detailed works generally comprise of 2-3 preliminary drawings then a redrawing of the final draft on to the map. Each piece can take 3-4 weeks to complete. Most maps used are from the UK circa 1960-1970s.

NOTE: This piece is mounted on adhesive 5mm foam core. The vintage map has inherent creases and imperfections which are part of the artwork and its vintage feel. Some of the creases can be seen despite the artwork being flattened onto mount board.

Painted in intricate detail the central figure of a woman emerges from an ethereal garden of baby buddha flowers.A courageous male warrior in blues and greens, adorned with tribal markings, jewellery and headdress who portrays the inner strength we can all find when we know where to look.A beautifully detailed Australian Goddess image in blues and greens, claiming her power, immersed in nature with perfectly imagined kangaroo flowers.
