This piece explores the challenges of a child, my daughter, living with severe photophobia due to eye disease. For many mothers, taking in the sight of their sleeping child, often after a hectic day brings so much joy and peace. For myself it is a mixture of this, and grief that even in her sleep she suffers pain and cups her hand against her eye. In this piece my intention was to capture conflicting thoughts at this time with the division, the light, the dark, the hard, the soft. Darkness is essential to sleep, yet we are often afraid of the dark. For Jade, she is afraid of the dark and needs a source of light to bring her enough comfort to sleep, that causes her pain so she cocoons herself with her pillows, blankets and hands in darkness. Things aren't always black and white, opposed to general perception darkness can be comforting, light can be harsh. Light bears on much weight in our life.
