Artwork Description

Once the fourth largest inland water body on earth – the Aral Sea has been drained to grow
cotton and rice. Today the sea is all but gone, holding just one-tenth of its original volume.
Most of its abundant fish species are gone, toxic winds howl over a desert landscape and the
lives of hundreds of thousands of Kazakhs have been destroyed. The Soviets destroyed this
region. In this context it is interesting to look at the namesakes of the boats, which are often
derived from the heroes of Soviet propaganda.

The Wrecks of T/X T. Tokhtarov and T/X ADM. Nakhimov

Admiral Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov was one of the most successful and admired
admirals in Russian naval history. He was particularly well known in Russia as the
commander of naval and land forces during the Siege of Sevastopol during the
Crimean War.

Tulegen Tokhtarov was a soviet soldier from the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.
Tokhtarov was a highly decorated combatant in the Great Patriotic War (late WWII),
posthumously receiving the Soviet Union’s highest military honour - Hero of the
Soviet Union (1943), Order of the Red Banner and the Order Of Lenin. He received
these honours after killing dozens of Nazi soldiers, in several cases, single-handedly.
