This was my entry into the National NAIDOC poster art competition for 2017. The hand prints in this painting depicts our connection to the past and the way in which our stories were handed down for thousands of years, from one generation to the next. As Aboriginal people, we never recorded our stories in writing but through language, ceremony, dance and story telling. Our languages are the one thing that has ensured that we stay connected to our Ancestors, our land and our Dreaming. It does not matter which traditional country you are from or which tribe you belong to, because our language is our own. This painting is strong in symbolism as that is what our languages consisted of. As Aboriginal people, our Ancestors will ensure that we maintain our connection because they guide us every day even during the modern times.
