A painting inspired by the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.
Eurydice, a wood nymph, is released from a tree-trunk by Orpheus’ enchanting song and the couple fall in love. Later as she walks through the woods, Eurydice is taunted by a satyr and running away she encounters a snake which gives her a fatal bite. After her death Orpheus is determined to release Eurydice from the Underworld. He convinces the god of Hades to let him take Eurydice back but there is one condition: Orpheus must always walk in front of Eurydice until they both leave the Underworld. If he turns to look at her, even to make sure that she is following him, she will not be allowed to leave. Almost at the exit Orpheus lost his faith and looked back and Eurydice was whisked back to Hades forever.
