This painting tells of the fascinating dominion of termites. Hidden within the earth mound is an air-conditioned palace inhabited by King, Queen, soldiers (the communes gallant defenders), workers (food gatherers who feed and tend the Queen and the young and who build and maintain the maze of rooms, corridors, cellars, vents and towers of their golden walled citadel. Wingless nymphs shed their skin and miraculously emerge as fully winged adults – future kings and queens of far-flung empires.
