About

Vanessa Barbay completed a practice-led PhD within the painting workshop at the ANU in Canberra. Her practice interrogates the representation of animals in painting through exploring materials as producers of meaning, including the bodies of animals themselves by pioneering a method of image generation through the creation of animal shrouds or decomposition printing. This technique evolved from formative exposure to her father Tibor Barbay’s taxidermy practice. Her research responds to the cultural histories embodied in European and Indigenous painting practices concerned with the depiction of animals in a contemporary Australian context, namely natural history painting and rock and bark painting, as both Aboriginal and European visual traditions have shaped her cultural upbringing. During her candidature she lived in Western Arnhem Land where Kunwinjku artists introduced her to the material and cultural significance of delek, the natural ochre collected in the region. She currently lives and works in Yuin country where she grew up on the south coast of NSW.
