Mullet, bitumen, oil, delek, and rabbit skin glue on canvas

Description

I am a saltwater woman growing up by the ocean and noting the abundance of fish in estuaries where salt and fresh water meet. One such place was culturally significant as a site where the remains of an ancient fish trap is evident for catching local mullet. In my work I have placed deceased local mullet on canvas to decompose (a process I developed for my PhD in response to my late father’s taxidermy practice). I have then painted the post decomposition image of the mullet in oil and bitumen and filled the ground with sacred white ochre (delek) I collected with Traditional Owners (the Badari family) in Western Arnhem Land. I conducted research into rock and bark painting with Kunwinjku artists in Kunbarlanja who told me delek was the faeces of Ngalyod the Rainbow Serpent. My work explores the significance of materials as carriers of meaning and cultural agency.
