Artwork Description

Mixed Media on paper, ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

Collaboration is a plein air image (painted entirely out of doors). My inspiration was the interaction between the sea and the atmosphere above and the way it might affect my interpretation of the horizon. I began the painting without an end point in mind and let myself be guided by what I felt. The blue, black and white lend themselves to the atmosphere that can be created when looking across water to the horizon.

There is a photo above that was taken the day I painted "Collaboration" at Boat Harbour on Tasmania's North West Coast. The sea looks calm here but this stretch of water is Bass Strait. Bass Strait can be one of the roughest stretches of water in the world. It has an average depth of 60 metres and lies in the path of the roaring forties winds which circle the globe at that latitude. It's also on the migration route for whales. I've seen pilot and humpback whales having the time of their lives not far off the shore.
