Still Life is an autobiographical area of work and my vintage china is used every day. It holds memories of happy times as a child with my elderly aunts, when we would have lovely afternoon teas in cosy kitchens or sitting rooms with scrumptious cakes and little sandwiches.
I sketch the composition for the painting on paper then draw directly onto the canvas with charcoal, brushing this back so only a faint outline remains. Then I apply the paint, looking at the still life arrangement in front of me in the studio, to try to capture the beauty and detail of these everyday objects.
