Oil paint came to popularity when public interest turned to realism during the Renaissance as it possesses qualities that can achieve high levels of detail and stunning effects of light and shade. Rembrandt was considered a master when it came to oil painting, and of course da Vinci used oils for his Mona Lisa, probably the most famous painting in the world.

As a slow-drying medium, oil paint also allows artists to work with the paint for longer and create effects such as blending or layering, sometimes changing the work completely. Palette knives and even rags are commonly used instead of a paintbrush to maximise its texture and pliability.
