About Alex Weltlinger

I'm a Sydney based photographer and filmmaker. Commercially, I shoot advertising and portraiture, and direct music videos, commercials and corporate content. However, I have also had 3 solo shows and been in a number of group shows with my personal photography work. I have been a finalist in the Manning Art Prize multiple times, a finalist in the National Portrait Photography Prize and have a couple of ARIA nominations as well.

As a commercial photographer and director/producer, my clients have included the likes of Jagermeister, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Universal, Chobani, BT, Raine & Horne National, Princess Cruises, Accor Hotels, Elefant Traks, the Australian Banking Association, EMI and Qantas amongst many others.

Self taught as a photographer, my art images have grown out of a relentless desire to make stories in single images. Often fantastical, I've tried to make my images appear painterly and stretch reality where I can, without being trite. If there's one theme I'm interested in above all, it would be perception, both by ourselves and others.

I live in Sydney's inner west with my partner, our two kids and a small, insane kitten.

Influences

Where to start? I grew up on a diet of Monty Python, Tolkien, Jim Henson's work and Douglas Adams. Those are my biggest influences.
I love drawn art, Shaun Tan is a particular favourite.
I love Dali and Escher - artists who played with what we conceive and can perceive.
I could list about 50 photographers who are big influences on me, but that would be tiresome. So, in brief and no particular order: Richard Tuschman, Annie Leibovitz, Gregory Crewdson, Bill Henson & Trent Parke
