Never Far Away

Some places live inside you long after you have left them: the green of the hill, the white flash of a cockatoo, the quiet figure on the water below. This painting is about the ones we love and the landscapes we carry with us, and how neither is ever really gone.

Never Far Away is an original acrylic painting on board, part of my ongoing Australian landscape work. It began the way these paintings always do, with a pour I don't control, then trees and cockatoos worked in loosely and fearlessly to the last mark. The blues and pinks run right through it, and two small figures stand at the top of the hill where the quiet is.

I grew up in a house that smelled of oil paint, watching my father work without ever being taught. Thirty years on, my paintings stand on loose, accidental grounds, half accident, half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. My cockatoos and figures are all one thing: my family, painted over and over in a glowing landscape, with the conviction that real happiness comes from within.
